BEDTIME STORIES NURSERY RHYMES BROTHERS GRIMM

THIS YEAR’S COSTUME THEME :

BEDTIME STORIES

All those seemingly innocent but twisted tales read to you while nestled in for the night — Mother Goose, Nursery Rhymes, Fairy Tales, or the Brothers Grimm. Become a cute and cuddly gingerbread, or sell your voice and experience death in a foamy sea. Let’s see your unique take on childhood books and fables.

  • Welcome to the most supportive, encouraging, and inclusive karaoke nights ever! Sing your heart out, or choose to listen and cheer on others as they give it their best. No power ballad too slow. No broadway number too long. No song attempts too many. And no 7/12 time signature too complex for an evening of sing-along fun.

Mark hosts the stage and manages mics, requests, and queue. If you decide, ‘Hey, I only live once,’ simply pick a song and put your name in. He’ll call you up when it’s your turn and get you singing. Get nervous or stuck? He’s got your back — and the love of the audience will help you along too. There’s never a shortage of cheers here. We’re basically the new participation trophy!

And while music and singing is a big focus of the night, there’s always food, drinks, an outdoor space, and good people and conversation if ever you feel you need a break.

  • We go potluck style! Please bring a simple dish, salad, or appetizer to share. Since people tend to get thirsty nursing their vocal chords, please also bring a favorite boozy or NA beverage to offer.

  • Um, yes please!

Most of our karaoke nights will have a specific costume theme. But that being said, you’re ALWAYS welcome to dress for a night of performance fun. Wrap up in your favorite feather boa, throw on 'yer 10-gallon hat, or try on that sequin jumpsuit. Whatever helps you feel brave to give it a try!

  • We love kids — have ‘em ourselves in fact. All ages are invited to check out the fun these nights bring. We’ll make time for the youngest kids to rotate in on stage earlier in the evening if they’d like a chance to join in.

But by 8p, once “lyrics” get flowing, we do ask that the stage becomes available to the more mature crowd. The outdoors will be open and we can put on a basement movie if kids are staying longer.

Please know that alcohol will be served, and we believe a bit of adult social time is therapeutic and warranted. It’s nice to unwind and feel free of less-judging eyes as you belt out some Bolton or get your Su-Su-Sussudio on. So plan your evening accordingly, or maybe a sitter, whatever helps the night feel most comfortable and fun for you.

  • Yes — sickness. Super important at group functions and we’d love your help. Please stay home if you’re feeling sick. We’ll miss you, but whether it’s COVID or something else, singing events risk sharing more than just fantastic songs. We ask everyone to please be considerate of others and play it safe.

Masking is always totally acceptable based on your comfort level. We’ll have hand sanitizer at the ready for those coming up to sing, and using your own device for song browsing can reduce shared surfaces too.

EVENING CHALLENGES

8PM

TALES OF TALES

For 30-minutes, we’re starting off on-theme. The first challenge requires you, my dear singers, to perform a song whose lyrics mention characters, plot lines, titles, or other connections to a beloved Fairy Tale, Nursery Rhyme, or childhood story.

10PM

SONGWRITER SEANCE

In this witching hour challenge, come on up to share a song by an artist long gone — or gone too soon. Try your best impression and reach out to the deceased with a special sonic tribute. And if we’re lucky, we may feel an odd chill in the air.

FIND YOUR SONGS

1

Finding your favorite songs is easy by browsing over 50,000 we’ll have on hand in the Karafun song catalog — right from the comfort of your own phone. Use the link above to head to their offering and playlists.

To jump in the queue, we’ll have a QR code you can scan with your phone to add your name and song to the list yourself. And for old schoolers, jot your name, song choice, and artist on a provided slip of paper and hand it in.

3

Searching songs before the event let’s you know what’s available and helps you get a feel for lyrics and nailing those hiiiiigh notes. Not seeing something? Just ask Mark. Sometimes got secret ways to find secret things.
